It is my belief that all students have a place in the music classroom regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, culture, and socioeconomic status. One unique aspect about music class that doesn't always pertain to other classes is that different cultures can be experienced in the classroom. I believe that music is a way to connect us all, one way to better understand your neighbor is to learn about their musical tastes. Because of this, I think that a classroom unit where students research and present on the music of other cultures would be an excellent way for the students to become aware of other cultures outside of their own. Additionally, I believe that having an ESL or ELL student present and teach music of their culture would be an excellent way to have the class relate to them, provided this was something they were comfortable doing. Knowing that each student doesn't always come from a musical background is also an important factor for educators to keep in mind. If I have the opportunity to slightly change the delivery of a lesson to better help more of my students grasp a concept, then I will do so. This does not however, imply that standards will be lowered. Students should be held to a high standard in order to ensure their educational growth. It is our job as educators then, to make sure that they reach those standards and beyond.
