Standard 4: The teacher of PK-12 music has skills in listening to, analyzing, describing, and performing music.
My education has given me many experiences in listening to, analyzing, describing, and performing music. In terms of listening, music students are required to attend a minimum of 9 recitals every semester. These recitals gave us the opportunity to hear many different kinds of music performed. Oftentimes a class would require us to attend one of these performances and then write upon it. One such example is in Music History 1, students are required to attend a renaissance music concert and reflect upon the sounds heard, music performed, and how it related back to the class. Additionally, in choir and other music classes, we are always actively listening to ourselves and the ensemble to find mistakes that need to be corrected.
For music theory and instrumentation and arranging, I was required to analyze a large number of pieces and describe their musical properties. As a student conductor in University Choir, I analyzed the music performed, led rehearsals, and developed units based on where the choir was at musically. In the voice department, I was required to give a jury each semester to demonstrate my musical abilities. Additionally, I gave a senior recital in my final semester on campus where I demonstrated the culmination of my performance skills.
I believe that all of these experiences have given me the tools to be effective in listening to, analyzing, and describing music in a way that is beneficial to my students. I have led a large variety of rehearsals that have given me the experience I need to be effective as their teachers. My experiences interning with the Flint Hills Children’s Choir have also given me many opportunities to listen to and analyze performances set forth by my own students.

Artifact #1
My final semester on campus, I gave a senior recital. This is the program to the recital where I researched each of my songs and told of them in the program notes. I believe that these descriptions prove that I am capable of analyzing and describing music, as well as performing.
Artifact #2
This is a concert review I did of John Blow's Venus and Adonis. With this review, I discussed the plot, musical devices, and compared the music to that of other composers. I believe that this detailed concert review will demonstrate that I am capable of listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
