Standard 5: The teacher of PK-12 music has skills in selecting, analyzing, interpreting, presenting, and evaluating music and music performance within the context of music education.
My internship with the Flint Hills Children’s Choir has given me many opportunities to critique and guide music in an educational setting. I led rehearsals with students ranging from 3rd to 10th grade in a large variety of musical repertoires. During this time, I focused on preparing Cesar Franck’s Panis Angelicus for the group’s concert performance. I was able to work on aspects such as diction, metrical stress, legato passages, imitative counterpoint, and dynamic contrast. Through this, the group produced an expressive and musically masterful performance.
Another opportunity I had to focus on music selection was in my final semester on campus. During this time, I developed comprehensive unit plans for an elementary and secondary classroom. For these projects I was tasked with choosing appropriate repertoire for my students and structuring instruction in a way to foster musical growth. I then had to develop lesson plans surrounding these songs to help my students grow as musicians.
Because of these experiences, I believe that my students will benefit in their musical experiences. They will have repertoire specially picked to fit their developmental needs and have a director that knows how to guide their rehearsals. Additionally, they will be able to learn from my knowledge and be able to grow in their abilities to analyze, interpret, and evaluate music on their own.

Artifact #1
This is an example from my high school unit I created. In this lesson, students are working on learning rhythms to a song they've recently began to work on. It begins with students in groups improvising percussion patterns. Eventually, the group works on the trouble section slowly, then speeds it up, adding in other parts as they go. I believe that this excerpt shows my ability to select, analyze, and teach a song in the classroom.
Artifact #2
This is a lesson plan I wrote for the children's choir I was an intern with. The focus of this lesson was to work on solidifying the Latin text and the correct diction to go along with it. I see this as a good example of my abilities to not only analyze and interpret music, but also to decide what needs to be worked on in a short amount of time.
