Student leadership in the ensembles is key to success. They help the students who are behind, set an example for the other students, and are trusted as a peer by the other students. Student leaders are some of the more independent students in the classroom which can help the other students get closer to that point. The ultimate goal is to have students become more and more self-capable of analyzing music, correcting their own mistakes, and understanding good musicianship. When this happens, they can begin to take control of their own learning. As a teacher, it is important to reach out to the families helping the students and to get them and the community involved. Only then can the group be fully supported. Parent nights are useful in schools because it allows the students to introduce the kinds of music to parents and allow them to potentially form a band/choir to practice the music for their students. Community is important for the success of these programs.
